|Frequently Asked Questions|
The School of Nutritional Science was started in 1977 by Dr. James Flaherty, Ph.D. Dr. Flaherty wanted to inspire in others the passion he felt for the field of nutrition.
His early research verified the relationship between food quality and body degeneration and he launched his school as a way to educate people on the essentials of nutrition.
Since 1977, people from all walks of life... MDs, engineers, food supplement retailers... have taken the course. (The most famous was probably Joanie Greggins who leads Americans at home in daily exercises on various fitness television shows.) Some took the course to further their careers in nutrition. Others so they could have a career. Many took it to simply improve their life styles and to increase their medical treatment options.
Dr. Flaherty never aggressively marketed his school. He found students through a few simple classified ads in health magazines. In November of 1995 the school was purchased by Dr. Kenneth Johnson, orthomolecular nutritionist, and his organization, International Nutrition Consultants, Inc. Dr. Johnson believes, as does Dr. Flaherty, that we can achieve optimal health by providing our bodies with the nutritional elements it needs. The School of Nutritional Science, says Dr. Johnson, provides an excellent medium for providing knowledge to a maximum number of people.
Complementary medicine, of which nutrition is a major facet, has become so prominent that many medical schools, including Harvard, Columbia and Stanford are offering courses in it. A recent survey in the Chesapeake Bay area found that 70% of family physicians want to receive training in the areas of alternative health.
Dr. Flaherty is the director of the School of Nutritional Science.
The School of Nutritional Science is licensed by the State of California for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.
As an international orthomolecular nutritionist, I have devoted many years to the study of why proper nutrition is so necessary for good health and complete well being. In my practice I have always searched for better answers, for ways to help my patients achieve and maintain their natural state of wellness.
Much of my time and energy goes into studying the extensive worldwide research of nutrition and herbs. A vast amount of documented evidence proving that nutrients and herbs can indeed help restore and maintain good health is now available. I aim to help make the knowledge available to as many people as possible.
My colleagues at International Nutrition Consultants, Inc. and I feel that the School of Nutritional Science provides an excellent platform for dispensing this knowledge. The basic course is a significant first step. There are several supplemental courses available for follow on study. We are consistently at work developing new material which will keep you on the leading edge of nutrition.
This information will be available to you through our newsletter, through chat groups on the Internet and through specially arranged conference calls.

Such records will substantiate a claim for reimbursement from the STRF, which to be considered, must be filed within 60 days following school closure. Our Goal Is For You To Be A Graduate Of The School!
Q: Do you place Graduates in jobs?
A: Most graduates have expressed their career objective to consist of operating a private consultation service to the public, as opposed to serving as employees of any type. Others wish to gain employment as assistants to physicians or chiropractors, or as health food store personnel. For this reason we sometimes obtain requests from prospective employers who write or phone the school about their needs in this regard. We encourage our students who seek employment to provides us with up to date resumes upon graduation. Although we do not guarantee employment, we will give employers the names and phone numbers (with permission from graduates) of graduates when the opportunity presents itself. No charge is ever made to our students or employers. Note: Once again, We do not guarantee placement.
Q: Do you teach your students to operate a business of their own?
A: Yes. This is INCA's main objectives.
Q: Do we receive college credits?
A: No. We are a vocational school, and award no academic degrees.
Q: How much do I earn as a Nutrition Consultant?
A: We do not attempt to answer this question. As in most every vocation, it is a matter of individual motivation and application to the effort.
Q: Do we need a license to operate as a Nutrition Consultant?
A: To date we have not heard of any existing requirements anywhere for licensing as nutrition consultants, except for regular business licensees required for any type of business in most localities.
Q: Why study nutrition?
A: Research continues to shed light on our biochemical requirements. As the picture gains focus, it is ever more clear that nutrition can substantially help fill these requirements. As a ringing testimonial, more and more medical doctors are practicing alternative health. Indeed, the New England Journal of Medicine recently published a study which showed that one in three Americans used alternative therapies. So, whether your interest in nutrition is for personal health or career reasons a more timely and relevant field of study could hardly be found.
Q: Why Correspondence?
A: Busy people need to be able to schedule their time effectively. The correspondence format allows maximum flexibility. It also tests your ability to pursue a significant project without constant classroom reinforcement and institutional monitoring. Completing a course of this caliber, with minimal structure, is an endorsement of your personal discipline and ability.
Q: Are the material and grading rigorous?
A: To absorb the course material in six months and be able to express it in writing requires rigor. However, the course material is factual, not theoretical, and can be mastered by anyone capable of completing their senior year of high school. Grading, though subjective, assumes that the ability to show a reasonable grasp of the course material should earn a "C". Higher grades are earned by those who more masterfully accomplish the test questionnaires.
